Candido Brown is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of BetterEd Solutions, a school improvement, transformation, and growth firm helping schools become happier, healthier, higher-performing places where every child can thrive. An educator, former principal, executive leader, instructional coach, and organizational strategist, Brown has spent nearly two decades helping schools strengthen leadership, improve instruction, develop adults, build healthier organizational cultures, and translate ambitious goals into measurable results.

Brown has built his career around a central belief: struggling schools are not destined to remain struggling. His work approaches school transformation as a management discipline, combining rigorous diagnosis, strong leadership, adult development, instructional excellence, organizational health, clear accountability, and disciplined execution. Rather than relying on isolated programs or short-term interventions, Brown helps leaders identify the conditions limiting performance and build the systems, habits, and leadership capacity necessary to produce sustainable improvement.

His career has given him experience at virtually every level of school improvement. Brown has served as a classroom educator, instructional coach, school leader, principal, Director of Operations, Managing Director of Adult Learning and Development, executive coach, consultant, and organizational strategist. As Managing Director of Adult Learning and Development, he worked alongside the CEO and C-suite leadership team to oversee adult learning and development programming and strengthen how educators, school leaders, managers, directors, and other professionals were developed across the organization.

Brown also spent more than a decade with Success Academy Charter Schools, where he developed deep expertise in instructional leadership, teacher development, academic systems, school culture, performance management, and high-expectation school environments. As a testing-grade educator, 100 percent of his students passed the New York State English Language Arts and mathematics examinations in every consecutive year he served in that role. He later moved into school leadership and, as principal, led the rapid turnaround of a struggling school in approximately three weeks.

Those experiences helped shape one of the principles that now anchors BetterEd’s work: school improvement is ultimately adult-development work. Curriculum, data, strategy, and technology matter, but none of them implement themselves. Sustainable improvement depends on the knowledge, judgment, habits, leadership, expectations, and daily decisions of the adults responsible for children.

Today, Brown leads BetterEd engagements involving school turnaround and transformation, executive and principal coaching, instructional improvement, leadership development, organizational strategy, school culture, performance management, charter renewal, professional learning, and strategic growth. His work is particularly focused on schools and organizations navigating consequential moments, including persistent academic underperformance, Comprehensive Support and Improvement designation, charter renewal, leadership transitions, organizational instability, culture challenges, and the need to fundamentally strengthen how a school operates.

Brown’s recent work has produced significant results across multiple jurisdictions. In Washington, D.C., he helped support a school that had been identified for Comprehensive Support and Improvement as it secured a historic probationary charter renewal. In Prince George’s County, Maryland, his work supported a public charter school in earning a five-year renewal. In New York City, Brown’s transformation work contributed to Beginning With Children Charter School II Middle School moving from 871st of 1,504 schools statewide to 465th of 1,500 schools, leapfrogging 406 positions in a single year and moving from approximately the 42nd percentile to the 69th percentile statewide.

For Brown, these results are important not simply because of the numbers, but because they demonstrate what becomes possible when schools strengthen leadership, develop adults, establish clear priorities, improve instructional systems, create management discipline, and consistently monitor whether implementation is producing better outcomes for students.

Under Brown’s leadership, BetterEd has trained more than 1,000 educators and 216 principals, executives, and directors and has partnered with more than 20 schools and education organizations. The firm’s work is known for combining high expectations with a deeply relational approach to leadership and organizational development. Brown believes transformational work requires both rigor and relationships: leaders must be willing to confront weak performance and establish demanding standards while also building trust, preserving dignity, developing people, and creating the conditions necessary for adults to grow.

Brown’s approach to school transformation typically begins with a comprehensive understanding of the organization’s current condition. He examines academic performance, instructional quality, leadership effectiveness, adult performance, culture, attendance, operations, family experience, talent, and implementation capacity. From there, he helps leaders identify a small number of high-leverage priorities, establish measurable 30, 60, and 90-day outcomes, clarify ownership, and build management routines that move the organization from strategy into execution.

Brown is also the Founder of The Institute for Better Schools, which extends his work through research, thought leadership, practical tools, case studies, and the study of successful school transformation. His long-term ambition is to help transform 100 schools in ten years while contributing to a stronger national understanding of how school improvement actually happens, why some transformations endure, and how effective practices can be transferred across schools and communities.

A Baltimore native, Brown attended Baltimore City College High School before earning his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Johns Hopkins University and his Master of Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. His earlier work included education policy and literacy initiatives in Baltimore, Cambridge, and Boston, experiences that helped establish the foundation for his later work in school transformation and educational leadership.

As Founder and CEO of BetterEd Solutions, Brown remains directly involved in the firm’s most consequential engagements, advising principals and senior executives, coaching leaders, developing BetterEd’s school improvement methodologies, analyzing organizational and academic performance, supporting high-stakes renewal and turnaround work, and building partnerships designed to expand BetterEd’s impact.
