School Improvement & Rapid Transformation · Executive & Principal Coaching · Instructional Leadership
Jennifer Bauer is a Partner at BetterEd Solutions and an experienced school leader, principal coach, instructional strategist, and turnaround practitioner whose career has been built around a central question: how do schools move from knowing what students need to consistently delivering it at a high level? Across roles at Success Academy Charter Schools, KIPP NYC, Ascend Public Charter Schools, and KIPP Texas, Bauer has developed deep expertise in rapid school improvement, principal and leadership-team development, literacy, data-driven instruction, adult learning, school culture, and the management systems that turn ambitious goals into measurable gains for students.
Bauer brings the perspective of someone who has worked at nearly every level of the instructional leadership pipeline. She began as a classroom teacher, moved into dean and assistant-principal-level leadership, developed teachers and school leaders, completed principal residency work, and ultimately led schools as principal. That progression gives her unusual credibility as a coach because she understands both the technical demands of excellent instruction and the day-to-day management realities facing principals who are responsible for an entire organization.
Her professional record is especially strong in environments where schools need to improve quickly. Bauer is skilled at identifying the few conditions that are most responsible for limiting performance, establishing clear priorities, building management routines around those priorities, and helping adults change practice fast enough for students to experience the difference. Her approach to turnaround does not rely on a single program. It combines instructional diagnosis, leader development, teacher coaching, data analysis, curriculum, culture, accountability, and disciplined follow-through.
Bauer currently serves as School Leader of KIPP NEXUS Primary in Houston, Texas. KIPP Texas describes her as a leader committed to closing academic gaps and building a culture of excellence and growth. During her tenure, KIPP NEXUS Primary has earned a B accountability rating, with an overall score of 81, including a score of 79 in School Progress and 85 in Closing the Gaps. Those results are particularly meaningful in a school community serving a high concentration of economically disadvantaged students and multilingual learners because they reflect not only overall performance, but the school’s ability to improve outcomes across student groups.
Before joining KIPP Texas, Bauer served as Principal of Brooklyn Ascend Lower School in New York City. In that role, she led a large elementary school community through a period of instructional strengthening and organizational development. Her work included developing leaders, improving teacher practice, strengthening literacy and mathematics instruction, building a culture of high expectations, and using student performance evidence to drive schoolwide decisions. Public records identify Bauer as the principal of Brooklyn Ascend Lower School during this period, and her leadership coincided with substantial academic growth across tested grades.
Bauer’s work at Ascend also included leading implementation of new instructional investments and helping educators translate organizational resources into classroom practice. When Ascend received a major philanthropic investment that supported new curriculum, Bauer helped lead the adoption of a Science of Reading approach at Brooklyn Ascend Lower School. Her focus was not simply on purchasing or introducing materials, but on ensuring that teachers understood the instructional shifts required to build students’ language, phonics, comprehension, vocabulary, and overall literacy development.
That distinction is central to Bauer’s philosophy. Schools do not improve because they own strong curriculum; they improve when adults know how to use strong curriculum well. Data does not create better outcomes simply because it is available; leaders and teachers have to know how to interpret it, identify the underlying problem, decide what must change, and follow through. Professional development does not transform practice because a session occurred; improvement depends on whether leaders create the observation, coaching, practice, accountability, and reinforcement necessary for adults to implement what they learned.
Before Ascend, Bauer served at KIPP NYC as a Dean of Instruction and Culture and Principal in Residence. There, she developed standards-aligned English language arts curriculum, strengthened instructional strategies designed to close academic gaps, coached teachers, and helped lead school culture. Her work required her to connect curriculum design with the practical work of developing teachers and managing implementation across classrooms. The experience also deepened her ability to coach school leaders on the systems beneath academic performance: planning, observation and feedback, data meetings, adult accountability, culture, and the allocation of leadership time.
Earlier in her career, Bauer spent four years teaching at Success Academy Charter Schools. That experience provided a rigorous foundation in data-driven instruction, student achievement, curriculum implementation, classroom culture, and rapid cycles of instructional improvement. Working in a high-expectation environment reinforced her belief that strong outcomes are produced through repeatable systems: clear standards, precise planning, frequent evidence of student learning, timely feedback, and adults who continually adjust their practice in response to what students demonstrate.
Bauer’s strength as an executive and principal coach comes from her ability to move fluidly between strategy and execution. She helps leaders clarify what success should look like, determine which evidence will show whether the organization is moving toward it, and then build the management routines necessary to keep priorities alive after the strategic meeting ends. Her coaching is direct, evidence-based, and developmental. Leaders are expected to examine performance honestly, distinguish root causes from symptoms, make decisions, practice stronger management behaviors, and establish systems that allow their teams to perform at a higher level.
She is particularly effective with principals and leadership teams navigating rapid improvement, leadership transition, persistent academic gaps, weak instructional consistency, curriculum implementation, school culture challenges, or the need to accelerate progress within a defined 30-, 60-, or 90-day window. Bauer helps leaders prioritize aggressively without losing sight of long-term sustainability. She understands that urgency is necessary in a struggling school, but urgency without systems often produces temporary compliance rather than durable transformation.
At BetterEd Solutions, Bauer’s work is centered on school improvement, rapid transformation and growth, executive and principal coaching, instructional leadership, literacy, leadership-team development, and implementation. She supports principals and senior leaders in diagnosing school performance, establishing measurable improvement priorities, strengthening instructional management, improving observation and feedback, building data-driven routines, developing teachers and coaches, and creating leadership systems capable of sustaining gains.
Her approach aligns closely with BetterEd’s 30-, 60-, and 90-day transformation model. In the earliest stages of an engagement, Bauer helps leaders determine what must stabilize immediately: the quality of daily instruction, clarity of expectations, leadership routines, student culture, teacher support, and the use of evidence. As the organization gains consistency, she helps leaders deepen instructional practice, strengthen adult ownership, and develop internal capacity so improvement does not remain dependent on an external partner or a single strong leader.
Bauer also brings a strong literacy lens to transformation work. Her experience developing ELA curriculum at KIPP NYC, implementing data-driven instruction at Success Academy, and leading Science of Reading work at Ascend gives her the ability to support schools where literacy performance is a central barrier to broader academic improvement. She can work with executives and principals on schoolwide strategy while also going deep with instructional leaders on curriculum, teacher practice, student work, assessment evidence, and the systems required to accelerate reading achievement.
What distinguishes Bauer is that she does not separate leadership development from student outcomes. Principal coaching, in her view, must ultimately change what happens for children. A stronger meeting structure matters because it improves execution. Better teacher feedback matters because it improves instruction. Better data routines matter because they help adults respond sooner to students who are not learning. A stronger leadership team matters because the school becomes less dependent on one person to identify and solve every problem.
Bauer’s academic background complements that practical experience. She holds dual undergraduate preparation in elementary and special education and sociology from Wagner College and a master’s degree in childhood and elementary general and special education from Touro’s graduate program. Her preparation in both general and special education informs her focus on closing academic gaps and ensuring that improvement strategies work for students with different learning needs rather than only for those already closest to proficiency.
Across her career, Bauer has built a record of leading through change while maintaining a clear focus on instructional quality and adult development. She knows how to enter an organization, read the evidence, identify the management and instructional levers that matter most, and help a leadership team begin moving them with urgency. She also understands that the ultimate objective is not a short burst of improvement. It is a school with the internal leadership, culture, systems, and instructional capability to keep getting better.
At BetterEd Solutions, Bauer contributes to the organization’s vision of transforming schools in our nation’s most underserved communities into happier, healthier, higher-performing places where every child can thrive. Her role is particularly clear: when a school needs to improve quickly, when a principal needs a demanding and practical thought partner, or when a leadership team needs to translate urgency into a disciplined transformation plan, Bauer brings the experience to help make that change real.
