What Qualifies as a Public Result

A result is eligible for publication only when every element below is documented. If one element is missing, the result stays unpublished rather than being estimated or generalized.

• An identified organization, or an anonymization approved by that organization
• A clearly defined measure, stated in the terms the source uses
• A defined timeframe, including the baseline and endpoint periods
• A documented source that can be re-examined internally
• A verified calculation, reviewed against that source
• Permission to disclose the result publicly
• Any limitation a reader needs in order to interpret the result correctly

Baselines and Endpoints

A baseline is the measurement period immediately preceding the change being described. An endpoint is the comparable measurement period after it. BetterEd compares like periods to like periods — the same assessment, population definition, and reporting cycle on both ends. When a school changes assessments, grade configuration, or population definition mid-engagement, the periods are no longer comparable and the movement is not reported as a single figure.

Percentage Points vs. Percent Change

These are different measures and BetterEd never uses them interchangeably. A percentage-point change is the arithmetic difference between two rates: a proficiency rate moving from 40% to 55% is a change of 15 percentage points. A relative percent change expresses that same movement as a proportion of the starting value: from 40% to 55% is a 37.5% relative increase. BetterEd publishes the representation the source supports, labels it explicitly, and does not substitute one for the other to make a result appear larger.

Verification

Before a result is approved for publication, BetterEd reviews the underlying source record, confirms the measure and timeframe, reproduces the calculation, and records who completed that review and when. This is internal verification. It does not constitute an independent audit, third-party evaluation, or external validation, and BetterEd does not describe it as one.

Attribution

A result that occurs during a BetterEd engagement does not by itself establish that BetterEd alone caused that result. School performance moves through leadership, staffing, instruction, student mobility, policy, funding, and community conditions at the same time. Unless a study design supports a causal conclusion, BetterEd describes movement as reported during the engagement, states what BetterEd was responsible for, and leaves the causal question open rather than closing it with language the evidence does not support.

Publication Permission

Identifiable client results, quotations, artifacts, photographs, documents, and other protected engagement information require appropriate authorization before public disclosure. Verifying that a result is accurate and obtaining permission to publish it are two separate decisions, and both must be recorded. A verified result without permission remains unpublished.

Limitations and Context

Where omitting a limitation would leave a reader with a misleading interpretation, the limitation is published alongside the result. That includes undisclosed baselines or endpoints, partial populations, short measurement windows, and figures that describe one measure rather than overall school performance. BetterEd states the limitation instead of filling the gap with an estimate.

Corrections

If BetterEd identifies a material error in a published result — in the figure, the measure, the timeframe, the attribution, or the permission behind it — the public record is corrected promptly, and the corrected result carries a new review date. Results can also be revised or withdrawn when the underlying evidence, definition, or permission changes.
